Western Waterfront Dry Dock Removal, Pier Rehabilitation and Bulkhead Replacement and Repairs
Town of Oyster Bay, NY
Department of Public Works

Description

The Oyster Bay Western Waterfront rehabilitation is a $13 million redevelopment project for a portion of the Oyster Bay Harbor waterfront. The 13-acre site was formerly the Capone property and the site of the Jakobson Shipyard. During World War II, smaller ships, including PT boats, were built and repaired on the site.

In collaboration with a team of architects, environmentalists, and other engineers, Bowne worked with the Town of Oyster Bay and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to develop plans for the redevelopment of the site for public use.

Following a topographic survey of the site by Bowne survey crews, basic site planning began with the determination of which of the buildings and shipyard infrastructure on the site was to be either retained or demolished. Bowne prepared plans and bid documents for the safe demolition and removal of the two massive marine railway systems and associated shore side infrastructure that remained from the former shipyard.

Bowne engineers performed a structural evaluation of the 1,120 linear feet of bulkhead which surrounded the site, and a 500 ft long pier, utilizing the services of Hudson Marine, Inc. of New Jersey for underwater condition surveys.

Based on the results of the survey, Bowne prepared the contract documents and performed construction inspection for the rehabilitation of the pier, the demolition and removal of the deteriorated concrete seawall and the construction of over 600 lf of new bulkhead.

The waterfront restoration project includes the reconstructed pier, boat launching and restoration facilities, docking for tall ships, a marine education center, and a new maritime museum.
