Land Survey at Trail View State Park
State of New York Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
Description
This project involved the determination of the right-of-way limits of a portion of the former Bethpage State Parkway in the vicinity of Plain Hay Path in the Town of Oyster Bay to Lawrence Hill Road in the Town of Huntington. The overall length is approximately seven miles with parcel widths varying from 380 feet to over 1,500 feet.
The purpose of this survey was the retracement of property lines to permit monumentation and to determine the extent of encroachment by adjoining property owners.
A key issue in establishing the Trail is the ownership of the adjoiner properties and the associated boundaries, as well as the location of all physical structures and land improvements that are encroaching upon the State-owned land. The Trail traverses areas where the bordering properties are owned by NYS Metropolitan Transportation Agency, NYS Department of Transportation, Nassau County and private developers. Bowne was given the responsibility to establish horizontal control positions for determining boundaries, areas of tracts of land and other pertinent information related to these adjoiner properties. The primary traverse was tied into the New York State Plane Coordinate System (NAD 83), Long Island Zone. Utilizing Nassau County National Geodetic Survey (NGS) first order horizontal control monuments, ties were made to NAD 83. Where the NGS monument spacing was too wide to conform to requirements for azimuth closure, Bowne set supplementary control using GPS surveying methods to tie into the NGS control.
