Hazardous Site Remediation and Monitoring
Long Island, NY

Description

Bowne Environmental Engineers have completed a variety of hazardous site remediation and monitoring projects for both commercial and municipal clients on Long Island. Representative projects include:

European American Bank
Flower Hill, NY

Bowne was responsible for sampling MTBE contaminated soil and advising EAB regarding a gasoline leak at an adjacent Exxon station. Bowne installed monitoring wells, gauged water levels, plotted the water table contours and mapped the MTBE plume on the property using the groundwater data from the wells. Exxon installed a “pump and treat” groundwater cleanup system on the adjacent property that remains in operation. Bowne has continued monitoring water levels and water quality.

Town of Hempstead
Elmont, NY

Bowne conducted a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment and designed a soil sampling program on contiguous active and former industrial properties. Soils were sampled as part of a Phase II subsurface investigation, and additional contamination was found. Investigations are ongoing to determine the horizontal and vertical extent of contamination under a voluntary cleanup program that will involve the NYSDEC.

Lewis Oil Property
Port Washington North, NY

Bowne reviewed and monitored cleanup activities on a petroleum bulk storage site while tanks were removed and soil and groundwater were sampled and remediated. The site includes a loading dock on Manhasset Bay. Bowne is currently overseeing site restoration.

Christ the King Church
Springfield Gardens, NY

Bowne has oversight responsibilities for a leak/spill site at an adjacent ExxonMobil station where an MTBE and petroleum plume has migrated into church/school property. ExxonMobil has installed a soil vapor extraction treatment system on the adjacent property that includes recovery and monitoring wells on the church property. Offsite monitoring is ongoing as part of the cleanup work.
