October 2003 Bowne Builds Spatial Data Warehouse for NYC Department of Transportation Bowne Management Systems, Inc. (BMS) has developed an innovative Spatial Data Warehouse for the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), giving the department access to crucial and time-sensitive data. The Spatial Data Warehouse is a comprehensive repository of spatial and operational data that supports GIS, decision support, application development, and infrastructure management at the DOT. The Spatial Data Warehouse contains capital project, traffic sign orders, signal defect messages, truck routes, traffic counts and accident data integrated with spatial data including LION, NYCMap and digital orthophotography. This data is refreshed on a nightly basis using extraction, transformation and loading routines that communicate with legacy mainframe applications. The system architecture is a Windows clustered and network load balancing environment which provides maximum reliability and fault tolerance. As part of the project, BMS also developed a custom web-based map and data viewer. Users can also access the system via traditional desktop GIS software, office automation software such as Microsoft Excel, and other custom developed applications.
