June 2003 New Web Based Workflow System Automates U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New York District Survey Section The Bowne AE&T Group has developed a web-based workflow system for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Operations Division, Survey Section. The Survey Section is responsible for all types of surveys conducted by the New York District. The Party Chiefs within the Survey Section track the progress of survey work and provide status information to the Survey Chief. Previously this process was performed manually, and it was becoming increasingly difficult for the Survey Chief to manage the current workload and forecast staffing requirements for future work. Bowne created the Survey Information Management System (SIMS) to provide workflow and workload management information to the Survey Chief on a real-time basis. Using the Corps’ Intranet, Party Chiefs now enter job status information from the field, and in-house staffs, in turn, report project status to the Survey Chief. SIMS automates most of the procedures that had been done manually and provides Corps management with numerous benefits, such as:
SIMS was built using the industry standard Active Server Pages (ASP) framework, Internet Information Server (IIS), and an Oracle relational database.
