Board of Assessors Chairman Charles O'Shea unveiled the first phase of a state-of-the-art computerized digital tax map database for the over 415,000 properties in Nassau County, New York. The Cadastral Mapping System, designed, developed and implemented for the County by Bowne Management Systems (BMS), provides real-time access to County tax map and land records data through designated public access terminals located at the Department of Assessment in Mineola, New York. "The Cadastral Mapping Project is a major step in utilizing emerging computer technologies and will improve Nassau County's information database and further enhance the Department of Assessment's delivery of services to our residents," stated Assessor Charles O'Shea at a press conference held on March 11, 2003 to unveil the system. The Department of Assessment's Cadastral Mapping System is a valuable search and retrieval tool that improves access to property information while eliminating the dependency on hand drawn tax maps. The system permits computer access to 18,500 tax map images and is also able to access both current and historical land records data. Using spatial database technology, BMS developed a system which accesses a database containing over 400,000 parcel records and millions of associated land records, in addition to over 500,000 property photographs, which are immediately accessible by the public. The program is also linked to the County's Geographic Information System and can display the Cadastral layer (lot and parcel lines) superimposed on high quality aerial photography of the County.
