Bar Code Cycle Count
MTA - Metro North Railroad
Description
The Bar Code Cycle Count (BCCC) application, developed by Bowne is used by Metro
North Railroad (MNR) warehouse staff to conduct random cycle counts on equipment inventory.
Through the use of handheld computers to record and maintain accurate equipment inventory,
BCCC takes inventory of warehouse supplies in a third of the time it would have taken using
conventional paper methods. The system has been in continuous operation since December 2002 with
no reported problems. Warehouse staff members have been very satisfied with the handheld devices,
which have replaced the manual paper process. Approximately 200 cycle counts per warehouse are calculated
during two eight-hour shifts, with 20 ad hoc bar codes being generated during each shift. The data is
downloaded from the mainframe and is stored on the device using Pocket Access. Text files are used to minimize
transaction throughput between the mainframe middleware and the handheld.
