ArcGIS Training
Suffolk County, NY
Description
Bowne provided ESRI certified ArcGIS training for 47 individuals from multiple departments
in Suffolk County, including
Health, Fire and Rescue, Police, DPW, Probation, Real Property and Planning. To accommodate the
different levels of experience among the users, two courses were held:
Introduction to ArcGIS I for the newer users, and Migrating from ArcView 3.x to ArcView 8 for
the more experienced, and/or veteran ArcView 3.x users.
Both three-day training courses followed the traditional ESRI format which provided the
individuals with basic ArcGIS™ concepts as well as the skills needed to become successful
ArcGIS™ users. The three main software applications, ArcMap™, ArcCatalog™, and ArcToolbox™,
were introduced and explored, providing the users with hands-on experience in creating,
editing, and working with georeferenced spatial data and in working with tabular
data, performing queries and spatial analyses on a GIS database, and presenting data clearly
and efficiently using maps and graphs.
While traditional ESRI training class formats and data were used, County datasets were also
integrated into the course exercises to make them more meaningful for the users. Because
County data is derived from many sources, one of the main concerns of the users was getting
the data to line up accurately. Users were shown how to project data from NAD27 to NAD83 so
that existing data stored in NAD27 would be lined up with the new 2001 aerials stored in NAD83.
